How Our Intelligent Variable Speed Limit Sign Works

Unlike our driver feedback signs, variable speed limit (VSL) signs display the speed limit instead of the driver’s current speed. But they offer the same bright, eye-catching sign face, speed violation alert options (flashing numerals, strobe light), data collection technology, and easy programmability. TraffiCalm’s intelligent variable speed signs are effective, affordable alternatives to the traditional, static speed limit sign.

With the built in electronics and existing firmware, the VSL sign can be configured to display the speed limit only when traffic is present, saving considerable power, ideal for solar powered signs. The displayed speed limit can be programmed to change based upon an internally programmed schedule or through the convenient Bluetooth connection. This feature is ideal for school zones, work zones, and many more applications.

Improve Work Zone Safety

Variable speed signs are effective at lowering speed limits for during traffic congestion, roadway or roadside construction, and adverse weather conditions. Posted at bridges, dangerous roadway curves, roadways with frequent heavy congestion, and work zone sites, VSL signs - programmable via Bluetooth or set to an internal schedule - maintain regular traffic flow and encourage decreased speeds.

For every 10 pedestrians or roadway construction workers struck at 40 mph, 9 will be killed. However, if the car is traveling at 30 mph, then 5 out of every 10 struck pedestrians and workers will survive. With a slight reduction of speed, chances of survival go from just 10% to 50%.
