"Familiarity breeds contempt" is an old adage that sometimes holds true in things like long relationships or working conditions. When it comes to traffic signs, familiarity generally means we simply no longer pay much heed to them. They become part of the background like trees or light poles and don't draw our attention in the same way after a while. This, in part, is probably responsible for the number of cars that speed through an area at any given time--the drivers are so familiar with the place, they go whatever speed seems reasonable rather than follow the signs.

They should, because road and path safety is an important part of the value and security in an area. Speeding cars make the streets less safe for pedestrians and other drivers, so most Homeowner Association leaders are going to be deeply concerned about any traffic problems.
If you're concerned about speeding cars in your neighborhood and want to bring up...

Read MoreEquipment used in construction and warehouse environments like forklifts, front loaders, order pickers and pallet jacks may not come with speedometers. At a glance it might seem they don't need them. They have limited speed capacity, after all. But a piled down front loader going its maximum speed can be extremely dangerous to the driver and those in the area. Driving slowly would seem to be a point of common sense, but it's easy to forget your speed in a familiar area, especially when you've done a similar thing time and time again.
Reckless operation of this type of...
Read MoreSpeed limit signs and things like speed display signs help slow traffic on highways and residential streets. They're effective everywhere they're used. An industrial site or warehouse might hardly seem like a place where speed limit signs or traffic calming measures are needed, at least not in comparison to a highway. But these are areas where there's usually a limited amount of driving space, heavy equipment and things like full shelves and palettes. There's also often poor visibility for movement inside small spaces. Maintaining a slow speed for all types of vehicles is...

Read MoreBusiness and corporate campuses offer a number of benefits to companies and employees that they may not find elsewhere. Campuses that house a number of separate businesses, even including things like dentist or doctor offices, can provide a pleasant and safe environment for customers or patients without the need for the business to foot the entire bill of maintaining the area. Corporate campuses allow all employees to feel more a part of a larger whole than if offices are scattered.
Anywhere a large number of people will travel by car, bike or foot, traffic can be an...
Read MoreStandardization is a valuable tool for communication and safety. While some people might think standardization means nothing more than a row of houses that all look the same, or they think of cloning and mass-production of an identical product, it's far, far more than that. MUTCD traffic signs are signs that follow the standards set in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. This is a standard guide that sets the rules for things like sizes, colors, symbols and uses of traffic control devices like speed display signs.
The importance of using MUTCD traffic signs,...
Read MoreTraffiCalm Systems, as an ISO9001 manufacturer of MUTCD traffic signs (signs that are compliant to the standards set by the Federal Highway Administration) that display speed, as well as those that can be used as variable speed signs, is naturally interested in the use of technology for traffic calming. And some of the concepts being studied are very similar to the driver feedback signs already manufactured by TraffiCalm. The concepts may be used in different ways, but the feedback used to change behavior is an ongoing theme.
